Review for The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.I was first introduced to Issa Rae through a coworker who turned me on to her YouTube series “Awkward Black Girl†and I was immediately HOOKED!!!! I was like “who is this girl… she needs to be on TVâ€. So I knew that she would make it big because TALENT that funny and raw and original had to be on the big screen. Just look at the HBO series Insecure (PLUG: If you have not watched this series it is a much see. Please check it out before the next season comes on).This was a great read!!!!! As expected, I found myself gasping and bursting out laughing on numerous occasions. Issa Rae is a trip and half and I LOVED every second of it! I can totally relate to her because I was/ kinda still am awkward and “geeky†in my own way and she is letting us know that it is PERFECTLY FINE to be who you are. She had me at the Introduction when she is talking about how people butcher her name. Considering I had an English professor name Dr. Diop and how much the students butchered his name, I couldn’t help but crack up laughing when Issa described how often she had to correct people to the point of frustration.Her other chapters go on to talk about all kinds of life journeys from an introvert and what some may call a “socially awkward†perspective. Some of my favorite chapters are A/S/L where she talks about her first “online dating†experience using none other than AOL chat room. This was the beginning of “cybersexting†before we even really knew what it was or had any business on the Internet let alone in a chat room. We know what kinda lies have been floated around in those chat rooms (lol). My other favorites are her ABG Guides; especially the “Connecting with Other Blacks†and “The Hair Advantageâ€. I promise that you will find humor in ABG Guide: Connecting with Other Blacks as you try to figure out which category you and your friends or associates fall in to (lol). In the other chapters, she talks about being “fatâ€, her family, growing up bi-coastal/ continental, relationships, short lived raps careers (lol), fashion (or lack thereof) and love.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could totally relate to many of Issa’s scenarios. She gets nothing but love from me. Soooo looking forward to the next season of Insecure as well as all her other projects and hopefully another book.
Friends: You have to watch this web series the girl reminds me so much of you.Me: What's the title?Friends: The MisAdventures of the Awkward Black GirlMe: Uhm, thanks.I wouldn't take any of my friends up on their recommendations until I learned that HBO picked up the series and would soon be on TV. Finally, I had motivation and did some research. Despite numerous recommendations to watch the webseries, my first exposure to Issa Rae was her memoir, The MisAdventures of the Awkward Black Girl. While I didn't finish the last page of her memoir as enamored as my friends, my interest in her HBO series peaked. This memoir was far from a dull read, it was fun and entertaining and I would recommend it. Issa's experience is quite relatable. I became nostalgic as Issa described her life first as an adolescent then as a college grad going to a job where you prayed every morning that you were able to make it home and not kill your co-worker. The MisAdventures is an entertaining read and I look forward to reading the next one.
This was such a fun and light-hearted read. It was very easy to follow and full of laugh-out-loud moments. I could relate to so many things Issa described in her book - being awkward, struggles with weight, never fitting in with peers growing up, being hooked on AOL Instant Messenger back in the day, and the list goes on. I appreciated the fact that she was honest with her trials, and able to show her vulnerability. I've been a fan for a long long time, and it was great to read about her experiences and the journey that led her to create ABG and Insecure. I'm looking forward to all the great things Issa does in the future.
Issa Rae is BRILLIANT! Loved everything about this book! Rae is the queen of awkward and makes you feel your own awkwardness really isn't so bad. I LAUGHED OUT LOUD throughout reading this gem and I look forward to reading more from her.
If you ever watched Issa Rae's Web series by the same as this book then you will enjoy this book. It also gives context as to what inspired her to create a path for awkward black girls and anyone who has ever felt out of place. The collection of stories here about her family, her challenges and her awkwardness are both funny and insightful. Even if you never watched the Web series, "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl" you can enjoy this book. It's an inspiration to those who live outside the margins of cultural stereotypes and exist in that gray area of uniqueness and self-awareness. Kudos to Issa Rae on this first book! I loved it!
5 Platypires for The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa RaeI became an Issa Rae fan after watching her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl. I immediately took to watching her interviews and picking up her book. I am so glad that I did.Issa Rae knows how to tell a story and she is so relatable. Her 90s references, and being a first generation American made me just her love. Plus her humor and wit are what makes her remarkable. I just want to be her BFF.I would highly recommend this book for anyone whoever felt awkward.
