As someone who has been following Dave's Youtube content purchasing and reading this book was a no-brainer.Software Developer Life contains a lot of advice and anecdotes about software development, the industry and much more.A lot of chapters can be read in Dave's voice if you follow his content and his videos, for example the notion of building yourbrand and presenting yourself.As someone who wants to know more about the industry, coding and improving myself this book delivered!It honestly felt like Dave was my mentor and was giving me advice, tips and tricks. (Note that the concept of learningand mentorship is also talked about in the book.) Dave does a really awesome job at clarify concepts that make thingseasy to understand. For example, his definition of fullstack of computing vs the modern definition of fullstack.In conclusion without giving away too much spoilers, the book was a great read! I absolutely enjoyed it. Go and get a copy for yourself!
My son, age 15, liked this book so much that he read the whole thing in one school day (don't know if he accomplished anything else that day). He was fully immersed. He really enjoyed the stories and knowledge gained from this book. He's an aspiring front end software developer.
If you are someone who is just getting started with software development and you want to know what a developers life is like this is a great book to give you a basic idia of what the lifestyle looks like!! I don’t really see the use for anyone who is already a professional developer. In my case, I am learning how to code out of interest and I am hopping to eventually land my first job as developer and this book was perfect in creating the picture of what life is like in the industry! The author is definitely worth looking up in youtube as well!!
As a new grad in Computer Science, this book was very helpful for me to learn more about the industry. I was looking for a book exactly like this since I didn't know much about the day-to-day of a software engineering job. Reading the honest anecdotes and reflections really calmed my anxiety about going into the field. I was able to realize that others face the same struggles and hardships that I do. I definitely recommend this book for new grads like me or for people that don't have much experience in the industry.
A refreshingly honest and personal book, a fun read, and invaluable resource for newcomers and veterans ion software alike!There are too many books on software out there, but not enough emphasis on how to be a good engineer in the real world. Touching on the many self-guided and institutional options for education, as well as personality traits and habits in the workplace, this book motivates self improvement and personal success. A must read for anyone in the field.
I recommend this book to those new to or interested in dipping their toes into software development. It provides a unique perspective into the industry, especially the start-up scene, while providing well rounded advice from a veteran. I enjoyed David's blog-esque style as a refreshing supplement to technical reading. I look forward to the sequel.
The book provides valuable insight for aspiring software developers. I personally enjoyed the tips in dealing with "The Angry Guy" in the workplace and the topic of understanding the basics when learning.
I'm a fan of the author's videos, but I did not find much value in this book as an experienced developer.I was hoping for more of a look into the day-to-day work of his and others' experiences as software developers. The book is more of an overview of the software development industry and education. The few chapters I enjoyed were the personal stories of developers the author interviewed.There's little structure to the book. Each chapter covers one area (e.g., career, learning, etc.) and there is very little cohesion. You'll read a section about CS education, then skip to one focused on careers, followed by coding, etc. Chapters don't really build on one another. The book reads more like a collection of blog posts.Some of the information isn't well researched. At one point, the author tries to illustrate an example using Walmart, but doesn't even know how many software developers they employ. He says hundreds or perhaps thousands. That's an order of magnitude difference that I feel the author could have spent a few minutes researching, and it puts doubt on another parts of the book.If you have little knowledge of the software development industry or computer science education, you'll find some value reading this.
